Sustainable Solutions: Renewable source

TrendsIndustrial Solutions

When we use materials that can be replenished quicker than the lifetime of the product, we rely less on fossil-based materials that take thousands of years to develop.

Based on our recent State of Sustainability Report, 64% of respondents are currently using renewable sources, with another 21% intending to start within the next three years. With 34% stating that customer/consumer demand is the most influential factor driving them to use these materials, it is clear an industry shift is occurring.

That's why it's important to provide a wide range of chemicals that meet the renewable source criteria. These are materials that are bio-based, or plant-derived, and can be measured through C14 (carbon fourteen).

Classifying chemicals as renewable source

No greenwashing

Eighty percent of the industry has concerns about greenwashing. That's why we carefully review and hand-select the chemicals we classify as sustainable. For a product to be classified in our renewable source category, it must first pass a screening to ensure we are promoting options that are not counter-intuitive to sustainability.

Aligning to industry standards

For our renewable source chemicals, we follow the C14, or carbon fourteen, standard. This allows us to compare the percentage of renewable and fossil carbon and then select the materials aligned with industry standards. We closely follow innovations and regulations and remain agile in our approach to evolve as the industry does.

3 promising renewable source and bio-based alternatives

Within the world of chemical intermediates, there is a great interest in sustainable alternatives to monomers and building blocks. And considering they make up the primary part of the formulas we see every day, this demonstrates a promising future for bio-based materials.

Over the last few years, some bio-based alternatives have shown both interesting and promising results when compared to their petro-based counterpart. Read our article to uncover 3 renewable source materials we have seen success with.
